Dear Someone collects the minimum necessary to operate. No advertising, no data resale, no tracking. This policy explains what is collected, why, and how.
Who is responsible for your data

What we collect
When you create your account, we collect:
- ·Email address — for authentication and notifications.
- ·Pseudonym — the name under which you sign your letters. You choose it freely.
- ·Country of residence — displayed on your sealed letters, to give the exchange a sense of place.
- ·Language — to adapt the experience.
The content of your letters and correspondences is also stored to ensure the service functions. We collect your timezone via your browser, solely to correctly calculate sending limits at local midnight.
We do not collect precise location data, payment information, or any data not listed here.
Why we use this data
- ·To authenticate you and secure your account.
- ·To operate the service — sending, receiving, and routing letters.
- ·To send you email notifications, if you have chosen to enable them.
- ·To moderate content in the event of a report.
We do not use your data for advertising, behavioral analysis, or profiling.
Cookies
Dear Someone uses two technical cookies, strictly necessary for the service to function:
- ·Session cookie — managed by Supabase, it keeps your session active.
- ·Timezone — stores your local timezone to calculate sending limits at local midnight. Valid for 1 year.
No advertising cookies, no third-party analytics.
Our processors
Your data passes through the following services, acting as data processors:
- ·Supabase — database hosting and authentication. Data stored in the United States.
- ·Vercel — website hosting. Servers distributed globally.
- ·Resend — email notification delivery. Data processed in the United States.
These services are bound by contractual confidentiality commitments. No data is shared with any other third parties.
Your rights
In accordance with Law 25 (Quebec) and applicable Canadian law, you have the following rights:
- ·Right of access — you may request what data we hold about you.
- ·Right of rectification — you may update your pseudonym, country, and preferences from your settings.
- ·Right to erasure — you may delete your account from your settings. All your data is deleted immediately and permanently, with nothing retained.
- ·Right to opt out of notifications — you may disable email notifications from your settings.

Account deletion
Deleting your account triggers the immediate and permanent deletion of all your personal data: email, pseudonym, country, sent letters, correspondences. Nothing is retained after deletion.
Replies you have sent to other users remain available to their recipients — they are part of that person's correspondence. Your identity is no longer attached to them.
Changes
This policy may be updated. In the event of a significant change, we will notify users by email or through a visible notice on the site. The effective date at the top of this page is always current.
