Terms of Use

Effective April 19, 2026

Dear Someone is a space to write to strangers, and receive their letters. These terms define the rules of the game — simply, and honestly. By using the service, you accept them.

Who can use Dear Someone

Dear Someone is open to anyone aged 15 or older. By creating an account, you confirm you meet this requirement.

The service is operated by Studio Existence inc., a company incorporated in Quebec, Canada.

What you can do

Write letters and send them out to sea. Discover and read letters from other users. Reply to a letter — by starting a correspondence, or by sending the letter back out to sea. Correspond with another user, at your own pace, and end the conversation whenever you choose.

What you cannot do

Dear Someone is a space for sincere exchange between people. The following are prohibited:

  • ·Hateful, discriminatory, or violence-inciting content.
  • ·Harassment, intimidation, or any form of abuse toward other users.
  • ·Impersonation or deliberate deception.
  • ·Mass sending of identical or promotional letters.
  • ·Any content that is illegal under the laws of Quebec and Canada.

Your writing

You remain the author of your letters. By sending them on Dear Someone, you grant the service the right to transmit them to other users as part of its normal operation. Dear Someone does not use your content for any other purpose.

Anonymity and privacy

Dear Someone is built on chosen anonymity. You sign your letters with a pseudonym of your choice — no proof of identity is required.

The service administrator may access your email address in the event of a report or technical necessity. They can read letters that are adrift — they see your pseudonym, not your email. Private correspondences between two users are hidden by default and are only accessible in the event of a verified report.

Moderation

Users can report a letter or message they find problematic. The administrator reviews reports and may remove content or suspend an account in the event of a violation of these terms.

Moderation is reactive, not preventive. Dear Someone cannot guarantee that all content on the service complies with these terms at all times.

Your account

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential.

You may delete your account at any time from your settings. Deletion is permanent: your letters adrift are removed from the service, your active correspondences are closed. Replies you have sent to other users remain available to their recipients — they are part of that person's correspondence experience.

The service

Dear Someone is free. The intention is for it to stay that way. No advertising is displayed, no data is sold.

The administrator reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the service. In the event of a significant change, reasonable notice will be given to users.

Limitation of liability

Dear Someone connects people who write to each other freely. The administrator is not responsible for the content of letters and correspondences exchanged between users, or for the consequences of those exchanges.

The service is provided as-is, with no guarantee of continuous availability.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the province of Quebec and Canada. Any dispute falls under the jurisdiction of the courts of Quebec.
